Nautical License

The Malta Nautical Licence is required by Maltese citizens and foreign residents living in Malta who would like to

  • Operate a vessel with an engine of 30Hp or over 
  • Operate a vessel with more than one engine whose total power is 30Hp or over.
  • Operate a Vessel that is less than 24 meters length
  • Operate a power-driven vessel within 12 Nautical miles of the Maltese coast

Course Name

Basic Seamanship and Safe Boat Handling (Nautical License Course)

Course Duration

28hrs based on 7 sessions of theory lessons;
6hrs based on 1 session of a practical lesson at sea

Purpose and Objectives

To provide training to persons wanting to skipper a pleasure boat of up to 24m in length within Maltese territorial waters with no restriction on horsepower.

Requirements

Persons must be no less than 18 years of age and applicants must have a clean Police Conduct.

Intake Limitations

Maximum number of students doing the same course is of 10 persons.
