Coastal Skipper Practical Course

A more advanced course for those with considerable knowledge looking to skipper yachts for longer passages or perhaps also looking towards taking MSA Certificates of Competency. Your chance to skipper a boat across to Sicily whilst under expert supervision.


5 continuous days.

Previous Knowledge required:

15 days sea-time (2 days as skipper), 300 miles and 8 night hours.  Level of sailing should be of Day Skipper Practical standard.

Course Overview:

This is a course for the more experienced sailor who wishes to take on longer passages by day and night. Using skills and knowledge regarding boat handling, sailing, pilotage, meteorology and collision regulations. You will be expected to be able to plan passages and make decisions without frequent help.

Your Instructor will give you every encouragement and assistance but it is down to you to take responsibility for implementing your plans. That means keeping the boat moving efficiently and safely along its course and at the same time keeping a happy crew.

The passages will involve sailing across to various ports in Sicily.

At the successful conclusion of this course you will feel confident and be competent to sail – with careful planning – to many places within The Mediterranean.

Certificate Awarded:

Coastal Skipper course certificate (non-tidal).

This is a worldwide valued sailing qualification. Many insurance companies are happy to offer discounts to owners who hold it.

It is also possible to extend the course by an extra day and be examined (subject to certain conditions and extra cost) for a Coastal Skipper certificate of Competence.

What’s included:

Just about everything you will need. All Instruction, accomodation on board – inc. breakfast and lunch hot and cold drinks, all bedding, life jacket, fuel , mooring fees and G15 logbook.
